SEG Automotive introduces electric motor to power e-rickshaws
- Published | 06 May 2019
Based on advanced technology instead of a BLDC (brush less DC) motor, new
motor co-developed between German and Indian engineering to cater to customers
in domestic as well as overseas markets which will boost the demand of electric
three wheeler market.
India: Auto parts supplier SEG Automotive India will start local
production of its first version of high range electric motors for e-rickshaws
from the fourth quarter of FY'20. The new EM1.2-HR e-motor, co-developed by
German and Indian engineering, is the company's maiden product for an
e-rickshaw segment and is based on advanced Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
(PMSM) technology instead of a BLDC (brush less DC) motor. The production of
these motors will take place at company's plant near Bangalore, SEG Automotive
informed in a media briefing. The company is aiming to make India an export hub
for these e-motors in the ASEAN region. Within the new range, the Bangalore
based firm is planning to introduce the second version of e-motors somewhere
around 2020 with added features.
According to BlueWeave Consulting, The electric
vehicle market in India is anticipated to create lucrative opportunities for
electric vehicle manufacturers as well as for vehicle component manufacturers
in the near future. The demand for electric vehicles is governed by an increase
in demand for fuel-efficient, high-performance, and low-emission vehicles.
Presently over 1 million e-rickshaw are already on the Indian roads providing
last-mile transport and soon this market will go up to 3 million units. The
three-wheeler segment is the second-fastest growing industry after two-wheeler.
The market growth is majorly driven by government incentives and environmental
policies, and declining battery prices. To address the issue of degrading air
quality, the Indian government launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing
of (Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme in 2015, in addition to
implementing environmental regulations on conventional gasoline-based vehicles.
In response, the OEMs are increasingly making investments to develop affordable
and efficient electric rickshaws and established players of the automotive
industry are making inroads in this market with the launch of new electric
rickshaw models.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are
the inevitable future of the automotive industry. Owing to the high demand for electric
vehicles, the market has developed significantly over the past decade, with
manufacturers focusing research on introducing cost-effective solutions to be
used in automobiles. However, incentives and subsidies on the utilization of
such a vehicle is a new factor propelling expansion for electric power drive
vehicles. Moreover, technological advancements in electric vehicles and
infrastructure with proactive government initiatives are expected to unfold
various opportunities for the growth of the electric vehicle and infrastructure
market in the future.
According to the recently published report by BlueWeave Consulting on
“India Electric Three-Wheeler Market, by Vehicle Type (Passenger Carrier and Load Carrier), by battery Type (Lead Acid Battery, Lithium-ion Battery and Nickel Metal Hydride Battery), by Battery Capacity (101Ah), by Region; Size and Forecast, 2014-2025”
India Electric Three-Wheeler market is
expected to record a CAGR over 15% during the forecast period 2018-2025. The
auto industry in India is one of the largest automotive industries globally.
