Western Digital, Micron bring the world first 1TB Micro SD Card

  • Published | 07 March 2019
Western Digital and Micron plans to start selling microSD XC card by second quarter of 2019 that can store 1TB of data which is expected to fuel the solid state drive market globally.
Global: Western Digital along with Micron launched its new microSD XC card that can store an entire one terabyte of data at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Western Digital publicized the new 1 TB SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSD XC card. The 1 TB SanDisk card can record with 90 Mbps write speeds and up to 160 Mbps read speeds. The new SanDisk card claim to transfer files 2x faster as compared to the standard UHS-I microSD cards. The storage solution is said to follow the A2 specification for launching and loading apps. Further, the new 1 TB UHS-I microSD card is said to withstand shock, extreme temperature, moisture, and X-rays. Besides SanDisk's Extreme microSD XC card, Micron has also announced a 1 TB card called the Micron c200 1 TB microSD XC UHS-1. Unlike SanDisk's 1 TB card, the read speed on the Micron SD card isn't as fast. The read Micron c200 1 TB microSD XC UHS-1 card provides a read speed of 100 MBps and a write speed of 95 Mbps. The micro SD card employs the Micron 96-layer 3QLC NAND and has Video Speed Class 30 support. Micron's storage solution will be available in the second quarter of 2019 while Western Digital's offering will hit the shelves can be purchased starting April 2019. According to BlueWeave Consulting, Rising adoption of high-end cloud computing and penetration of SSDs in data centers is expected to fuel the market. Small scale SSD’s are being implemented in laptops, personal computers, and to some extent in tablets, mobile phones. Increasing the resolution of images and movies has also led to the creation of large volumes of digital data and content. This has led to growing demand for adequate capacity to store content.  SSDs are also a viable option for data centers as they offer high speed, hierarchical storage, and mass volume due to their non-volatile memory technology as they also provide high-speed bus interface aiding high data-transfer speed in enterprise systems. A solid state drive (SDD) is a type of non-volatile storage media that stores persistent data on solid-state flash memory. The architectural configuration of a typical SDD controller is optimized to deliver high performance of read and write functions. Upward penetration of the Internet, the growing e-commerce industry, and increasing volume of media data transfer are expected to drive the market. Additionally, MicroSD cards are reliable, as they have nonvolatile memory that maintains the stability of the data on the card, solid supports of the state, very portable, availability in all sorts of sizes, can be used in various devices such as cameras, computers or mobile phones and consumes very little power. According to BlueWeave consulting’s recent published report, “Solid State Drives Market, By Type (Internal and External), By Interface (SATA, SAS, and PCle), By Storage (Under 120GB, 120GB-500GB, 500GB-1TB, and 1 TB above), By Form Factor (1.8-inch, 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch, and 5.25-inch), By Technology (SLC, MLC Planar, MLC 3D, TLC Planar, TLC 3D), By End-User (Enterprise, client), By Region (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East & Africa); Size and Forecast, 2018-2025,” The future of global SDD market is prophesied to be attractive with increasing digitization and growth of media content, across the globe. As per the study, the global solid state drive market is estimated to cross the $60,000 million mark by 2023. On the account of significant advancement in technologies, high enterprise application demand for greater performance, storage, power efficiency, more dependability requirement from content generation industry, and swelling large data centers, the global SDD market has been gaining more traction in recent times. Lucrative opportunities in the design and development of SDDs along with massively growing adoption of cloud technology is firming a positive future of the global solid state drive industry.
