Report Overview

Global leukapheresis market was worth USD 51.6 billion in 2020, and is further projected to reach USD 87.5 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 7.8% during 2021-2027 (forecast period).

Global Leukapheresis Market Share, Industry Trends & Forecast Report 2027

Global leukapheresis market was worth USD 51.6 billion in 2020, and is further projected to reach USD 87.5 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 7.8% during 2021-2027 (forecast period). The leukapheresis procedures are performed to determine the cause of a decline in white blood cell counts Increasing incidence and prevalence of leukemia disease, demand for leukopaks for research applications, and an increase in blood donations are some of the factors driving the market demand. Furthermore, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies have been growing their investment in medical research and development, which contributes to the overall market growth.

Global Leukapheresis Overview

Leukapheresis is a medical procedure that separates white blood cells (leukocytes) involved in the body's immune response from a blood sample. It is a type of apheresis in which a component of blood is extracted while the remaining blood is returned to circulation. Leukapheresis is often used to decrease very high white blood cell (WBC) counts such as can occur with chronic blood cancers like chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It can also be used to collect white blood cells for later transplant, such as to treat sharp declines in WBC counts caused by cancer chemotherapy.

Global Leukapheresis Market Trend

Growth Drivers

Rising Cases and Prevalence of Leukemia

Leukemia is a type of blood cell cancer. Blood cells are classified into three types: red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. Leukemia, in general, refers to cancers of the white blood cells. The rising incidence and prevalence of leukemia have risen significantly because of the genetic history of leukemia (inherited) and excessive smoking by pregnant women, which infects their blood and weakens their immune system. In 2020, the American Cancer Society estimated that there are 60,530 leukemia cases in the United States, owing to which the number of therapeutic leukapheresis procedures is increasing, thereby boosting the growth for the global leukapheresis market. Consumption of leukopaks has risen dramatically due to an increase in leukemia cases worldwide. Furthermore, since leukopaks are generated from normal peripheral blood and are transfused into infected bodies, the increased use of leukopaks fuels the growth of the global leukapheresis industry.

Rise of Leukapheresis in Pediatric Patients

According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Community, 7.2 children per 100,000 are at risk of developing leukemia. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) define pediatric patients as persons aged 21 or younger at the time of their diagnosis or treatment. Doctors predict that one of the causes of childhood leukemia is that the mother was exposed to high levels of radiation or smoked excessively during her pregnancy, which resulted in the child developing leukemia. The scarcity of hospitals in both developed and developing countries that have specialist doctors for leukapheresis care for children drives market development. Furthermore, to counteract this problem, many government programs are being implemented to make leukemia care available at government hospitals, which is fueling the market growth.

Restraints

The High cost of Leukapheresis Products and Leukemia Treatment

Because of the high cost of care, the mortality rate from leukemia is increasing. People with leukemia often do not receive adequate treatment, which is a significant factor limiting the global leukapheresis market's growth. To battle leukemia, patients are required to consume leukapheresis products. The cost of these items is high, and most people cannot afford them, limiting the market growth. Furthermore, the leukapheresis treatment method and its components, leukopaks, are in very early stages of development. Blood cancer, also known as leukemia, is a deadly disease. The World Health Organization estimates that blood cancer could kill about 10 million people by 2020.

Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the global economy besides affecting business operations. Due to the high infection rates and adverse impact on public health systems, various countries had to enforce nationwide lockdowns which had a major impact on industrial supply chains, trade, and related services. The treatment of leukapheresis entails a large amount of blood transmission. As a result, people are afraid and are not getting proper treatment because they are afraid of being infected with COVID-19. Moreover, millions of enterprises face an existential threat. Informal economy employees are especially vulnerable because the majority lack social security, access to quality health care, and productive assets. Almost half of the world's 3.3 billion population is at the risk of losing their jobs.

Global Leukapheresis Market: By Applications

Based on application, the global leukapheresis market is grouped into research applications and therapeutic applications. In 2020, the research applications segment accounted for the largest share in the leukapheresis market. Immunology is becoming more widely used in cancer treatment, allowing patients to heal more quickly. In addition to that, infectious diseases, drug discovery, regenerative medicine, and cell-based therapies all contribute to the expansion of the leukapheresis industry. Cell-based therapies are the most commonly used means of treating deadly diseases such as cancer. Transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells is used for generating bone marrow; this type of innovation contributes to the global leukapheresis market's growth.

Global Leukapheresis Market: By Product

Based on product types, the global leukapheresis market is fragmented into devices, filters, columns, and disposables. The device segment held the largest share in the market in 2020 and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period. This growth can be attributed to the increasing installation of centrifugal apheresis devices in hospitals, which are used in therapeutic leukapheresis procedures conducted to treat leukemia. Various blood donation centers and hospitals having facilities to treat leukemia patients are the major consumers of centrifugal apheresis. These are a few factors propelling the growth of the global leukapheresis market.

Global Leukapheresis Market: Regional Insights

Geographically, the global leukapheresis market is categorized into North America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East & Africa, and Latin America. The Asia-Pacific leads the global leukapheresis market and is projected to lead the overall market during the forecast period. The region's aging population is contributing to an increase in the incidence of leukemia. At the same time, improving healthcare infrastructure, which is accompanied by an increase in the number of clinical trials, especially in China, drives the market even further. Furthermore, the increasing public and private investments for the development of CAR-T cell therapy have increased the demand for leukapheresis testing services and the market in the region.

Competitive Landscape

The global leukapheresis market's high growth potential has attracted a slew of new entrants, resulting in numerous lucrative opportunities. The emergence of new entrants has also resulted in healthier competition among long-established service providers. Companies such as Haemonetics Corporation and Charles River Laboratories are investing in and securing lucrative contracts that will enable humanity to have access to cutting-edge technology in the future.

Some of the key players in the global leukapheresis market are Terumo BCT Inc., Lonza Group AG, Puri Blood Medical Co. Ltd, Beijing ZKSK Technology Co.
